Head and neck cancer Myth Buster #05 · Causes & risk

If I stop chewing tobacco, my cancer risk becomes zero straight away?

✕ Not true
Fact

Quitting lowers your future risk, but some extra risk can remain for years. Regular mouth checks are still important, especially if you already have patches.

What to do

Quitting is always worth it, at any age. Keep up regular mouth examinations with a doctor or dentist, and check your own mouth once a month. See a doctor about anything that lasts more than two weeks.

Mouth self-checkOnce a month, in good light, look at and feel your lips, gums, cheeks and tongue. See a doctor for anything that lasts more than two weeks.

Why people believe it

Stopping a long habit is hard, and it is natural to hope the damage is undone the day you stop.

What the evidence shows

After you quit, your risk of mouth cancer starts to fall and keeps falling over the years. But tobacco may already have caused changes in the lining of the mouth, and some extra risk can last a long time. People who already have white or red patches, or oral submucous fibrosis, need regular check-ups, because these can still turn into cancer.

  • Stand in good light in front of a mirror, and remove any dentures
  • Look at and feel your lips, gums and the inside of both cheeks
  • Stick out your tongue and check the top, sides and underneath
  • Look at the roof and floor of your mouth
  • Feel both sides of your neck for any lump
