Activity and time with others can often continue with sensible precautions. Restrictions depend on blood counts, infection risk, the phase of treatment and the person's condition.

During intensive treatment, when white cell counts are low, infections are a real risk, and some precautions are important. But at other times, gentle activity, time with family and returning to school or work when advised help both physical and emotional recovery. The team will advise what is safe at each stage.

- Fever during treatment is an emergency: go to hospital straight away
- Wash hands often, and avoid people who are unwell
- Wear a mask in crowded places when counts are low
- Eat freshly cooked food, and wash fruit and vegetables well
- Stay gently active, as your team advises
