Fever, pain and vomiting after TACE mean the treatment has failed?
Fever, pain, nausea and tiredness for a few days after TACE are common and expected as the treated tumour breaks down. They do not mean the treatment failed.

What the evidence shows
TACE (transarterial chemoembolisation) sends medicine directly into the blood vessels that feed the liver cancer and then blocks them, so the tumour is starved of blood. As the tumour dies, many people have fever, pain on the right side of the abdomen, nausea and tiredness for a few days, called post-embolisation syndrome. It usually settles within a week with painkillers, anti-sickness medicines and fluids. Whether TACE has worked is judged on a scan, usually 4 to 8 weeks later.
What you can do
Take the medicines given for pain and nausea. Contact the hospital urgently for fever lasting more than a week, shivering, yellow eyes, confusion, black stools or vomiting blood.
