People with hepatitis B cannot have chemotherapy, immunotherapy or other cancer treatment?
People with hepatitis B can have cancer treatment safely. Antiviral tablets started before treatment stop the virus from flaring up.
Why people believe it
People hear that cancer treatment can wake up hepatitis B and fear that treatment is forbidden.
What the evidence shows
Hepatitis B can become active again when the immune system is affected by chemotherapy, immunotherapy, steroids or procedures such as TACE. A severe flare can damage the liver. This is preventable. A simple blood test before treatment shows who carries the virus or has had it in the past, and antiviral tablets such as entecavir or tenofovir, started before cancer treatment, protect the liver. This applies to people with any cancer, not only liver cancer.
What you can do
Tell your cancer doctor if you have ever had hepatitis B or jaundice. Ask whether you have been tested before treatment starts, and take antiviral tablets exactly as prescribed; never stop them on your own.
