If lung cancer has spread to the lymph nodes, it is automatically stage IV?

Lung cancer stage depends on the size of the tumour, which lymph nodes are involved, and whether it has spread further. Lymph nodes near the lung or in the centre of the chest usually mean stage II or III. Many of these cancers are treated with the aim of cure, using surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy or a combination. Stage IV generally means spread to distant organs, such as the brain, bones, liver or the other lung, or cancer cells in the fluid around the lung or heart.
