If I had TB before, my new cough must be TB again?

Not necessarily. People who have had TB have a higher risk of lung cancer, so new symptoms need fresh tests, not an automatic repeat of TB treatment.

Old TB leaves scarring in the lungs, and studies show that people who have had TB have a higher risk of later developing lung cancer. TB can come back, but so can other problems, including cancer. Repeating TB medicines without proof can delay the right diagnosis by months. A new cough, weight loss or blood in the sputum after TB needs a sputum test and usually a CT scan, and sometimes a biopsy.
