Lung cancer Myth Buster #10 · Symptoms & early detection

Everyone should have a yearly CT scan to check for lung cancer?

Fact

Low-dose CT screening is meant for selected people at high risk, not for everyone. Whether you qualify depends on your age, smoking history and the guidelines your doctor follows.

If CT scans can find lung cancer early, it seems logical that everyone should have one every year.

What the evidence shows

Low-dose CT screening has been shown to save lives in people at high risk, mainly older adults with a long history of heavy smoking. In many guidelines, this means people aged about 50 to 80 who smoked heavily for many years, including those who quit within the last 15 years. For people at lower risk, the downsides can outweigh the benefits: scans often find harmless spots that lead to worry, repeat scans and sometimes unnecessary procedures, along with small doses of radiation.

Who may benefit from screening

  • Adults aged about 50 to 80
  • A long history of heavy smoking
  • Current smokers, or those who quit within the last 15 years
  • Fit enough to have treatment if something is found

What you can do

Ask your doctor whether screening is right for you, based on your own risk. Don't have yearly CT scans "just to be safe" without that discussion.
