Lymphoma Myth Buster #27 · Modern treatment & survivorship

After Hodgkin lymphoma treatment, regular PET or CT scans catch a relapse early and help you live longer?

Fact

Once you are in complete remission, routine scans without symptoms rarely find a relapse earlier than symptoms or a check-up would, and they add radiation. Regular visits, blood tests and reporting new symptoms matter more.

Follow-up visitsExamination and blood tests every few months at first, then yearly; scans only when something new appears.

Why people believe it

Scans feel more thorough than an examination, and many people find them reassuring.

What the evidence shows

Most relapses of Hodgkin lymphoma happen in the first two to three years and show up as new glands, fever, sweats, itching, weight loss or cough. Routine scans in people without symptoms rarely detect a relapse earlier, while repeated CT and PET scans add radiation, especially for young people, and can show harmless findings that lead to more tests. Guidelines therefore advise a scan only when symptoms, the examination or blood tests suggest a problem. Follow-up continues for life, but its focus shifts to late effects such as thyroid, heart and breast checks.

What you can do

Keep your follow-up visits and report new symptoms without waiting for the next one. Ask for a scan when something new appears, not as a routine.
