Taking vitamins, herbal products or antioxidant supplements prevents cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Routine supplements have not been shown to reliably prevent cancer in the general population. Some high-dose supplements may even cause harm.

Why people believe it

Supplements and herbal products are widely marketed as "immunity boosters" or cancer protection.

What the evidence shows

Large studies of vitamins and antioxidants have mostly found no protection against cancer. Some found harm: high-dose beta-carotene raised lung cancer risk in smokers, and high-dose vitamin E was linked with more prostate cancer. Some herbal products can also damage the liver or interact with medicines.

What you can do

Get your nutrients from a varied diet of vegetables, fruit, pulses and whole grains. Ask your doctor before taking supplements, especially during cancer treatment.
