Screening and prevention Myth Buster #21 · Breast & cervical screening

Examining my own breasts every month is enough; I don’t need a check-up?

Fact

Knowing how your breasts normally look and feel helps you notice changes early, but it does not replace a clinical breast examination or a screening mammogram.

Why people believe it

Breast self-examination is widely taught, so many women feel that checking themselves each month is all the screening they need.

What the evidence shows

Large studies of routine monthly self-examination did not show fewer deaths from breast cancer, and they led to more biopsies of harmless lumps. Being familiar with your own breasts still matters, because most cancers in India are first noticed by women themselves. Screening adds what self-checks cannot: in a large trial in Mumbai, clinical breast examination every two years by trained female health workers found cancers at an earlier stage and lowered breast cancer deaths in women aged 50 and above. Mammography, where available, can find cancers even smaller than a hand can feel.

What you can do

Get to know your breasts and report any change promptly. Between 30 and 65, take up the free clinical breast examination offered at government health centres, and from 40, ask your doctor about mammography.
