Stage IV and palliative care Myth Buster #05 · Understanding stage IV

Stage IV cancer always causes severe pain and suffering?

✕ Not true
Fact

Some people have few symptoms, while others develop significant problems. Modern supportive and palliative treatments can relieve many symptoms.

Why people believe it

Fear of pain and suffering is one of the greatest fears families have after a stage IV diagnosis.

What the evidence shows

Many people with advanced cancer live with few symptoms for long periods. When pain, breathlessness, nausea or other symptoms do develop, they can usually be relieved with medicines, radiotherapy, nerve blocks and other treatments. Uncontrolled pain should never be accepted as inevitable.

What you can do

Tell your team about any symptom early. If pain isn't controlled, ask to see a palliative care specialist.
