Stage IV and palliative care Myth Buster #10 · Treatment in stage IV

If cancer grows despite treatment, every available drug should be tried?

✕ Not true
Fact

More treatment is right when its likely benefit outweighs the harm. In some situations, focusing on symptom control and quality of life helps more than further anticancer treatment.

Why people believe it

Families often feel that stopping treatment means giving up, and push for every possible option.

What the evidence shows

Each new line of treatment tends to have less chance of working, and its side effects, hospital visits and costs can take a heavy toll, especially as a person becomes weaker. At some point, the best care may be to focus fully on comfort, time with family and the things that matter most. This is a medical judgement made together with the patient, not abandonment.

What you can do

Ask your doctor honestly what further treatment is likely to achieve, and talk as a family about what matters most to the patient.
