✕ Not true
Fact

Most stomach ulcers are benign. Suspicious ulcers are biopsied, and a repeat endoscopy may be needed to confirm healing.

Why people believe it

Being told you have an ulcer can be frightening, and some people assume it means cancer.

What the evidence shows

Most stomach ulcers are caused by H. pylori infection or by painkillers such as aspirin and other anti-inflammatory medicines, and they heal with treatment. Because a small number of cancers can look like ulcers, doctors usually take biopsies from stomach ulcers, and often repeat the endoscopy after treatment to make sure the ulcer has healed completely.

What you can do

Take your ulcer treatment exactly as prescribed, avoid unnecessary painkillers, and attend the repeat endoscopy if one is advised.
