Stomach and oesophageal cancer Myth Buster #15 · Oesophageal cancer

If someone can swallow liquids, there can't be oesophageal cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

A narrowing of the food pipe usually affects solid food first, while liquids still pass. Waiting until liquids become difficult can dangerously delay diagnosis.

Why people believe it

Families often reason that if water and porridge go down, the problem can't be serious.

What the evidence shows

As a tumour narrows the food pipe, solid foods such as rice, chapati or meat start to stick first. Liquids pass much more easily, so people adapt by eating softer food and soups, often for months. By the time liquids are difficult to swallow, the cancer is usually advanced.

What you can do

If solid food is sticking, see a doctor now. Don't wait until liquids become difficult.
