Brain cancer spreads all over the body like other cancers?

Tumours that start in the brain very rarely spread outside the brain and spinal cord. Some can spread through the fluid around the brain and spine, which doctors check for.

Most cancers are feared because they spread to the liver, lungs or bones, so people expect the same from brain cancer.

Gliomas grow into the surrounding brain rather than spreading through the bloodstream, and spread outside the nervous system is rare. Some brain tumours, especially in children (such as medulloblastoma and ependymoma), can spread through the brain and spinal fluid, so doctors do an MRI of the spine and test the fluid. This is different from metastases: cancers from the lung, breast or skin that spread into the brain.

Ask your doctor whether your tumour type needs a spine MRI or fluid test, and what the scans show. Body scans are usually not needed for tumours that start in the brain.
