When one person in the family has bowel cancer, the others do not need any tests?
Brothers, sisters, children and parents of someone with bowel cancer have a higher risk and usually need colonoscopy earlier than others. Some families carry an inherited condition, such as Lynch syndrome, that can be tested for.

Why people believe it
Cancer is often seen as one person’s misfortune, and families may not discuss it.
What the evidence shows
Having a close relative with bowel cancer roughly doubles your risk, more if they were young. Doctors usually advise colonoscopy from age 40, or 10 years before the age your relative was diagnosed. Every bowel cancer should be tested for mismatch-repair status; if it suggests Lynch syndrome, a blood test can show which relatives carry it, so they can have regular colonoscopy and other checks.
What you can do
Tell your relatives about your diagnosis, ask whether your tumour was tested for MMR, and ask your doctor when each family member should start screening.
