An ultrasound can detect every ovarian cancer at an early stage?
Ultrasound is useful for checking a lump in the pelvis, but routine ultrasound screening of women without symptoms has not been shown to save lives.

Why people believe it
If ultrasound can see the ovaries, it seems logical that a yearly scan would catch any cancer early.
What the evidence shows
Large studies of women at average risk have not shown that routine screening with ultrasound and CA-125 reduces deaths from ovarian cancer. Some cancers develop quickly between scans, and many harmless cysts are found, leading to worry and unnecessary operations. Ultrasound remains very useful when a woman has symptoms, or when a lump has been found.
What you can do
Don't rely on a routine scan to rule out ovarian cancer. Report symptoms promptly. If you carry a BRCA gene change or have a strong family history, ask about a specialist plan, which may include risk-reducing surgery.
