Why people believe it

Because it is called a cancer of the lymph nodes, people don't expect lymphoma elsewhere.

What the evidence shows

Lymphocytes, the cells that become lymphoma, travel throughout the body, so lymphoma can start almost anywhere. Examples include lymphoma of the stomach (some early types, linked to H. pylori, can be treated with antibiotics), the bowel, the brain, the skin, the testis, bone, and the tonsils. Symptoms depend on where it starts.

What you can do

Report persistent symptoms in any part of the body. If you have been diagnosed with lymphoma outside the nodes, ask how its location affects your treatment.
